Tonka Pies and Campfire Smoke

It's definitely summertime and that means one thing when it comes to family gathering around the backyard fire pit: Tonka Pies!

We love them!  All you need is a campfire, a Tonka iron, butter, a loaf of bread, and whatever pie filling you desire!  Our family favorite is apple pie filling, but you can use cherry, blueberry, lemon or whatever your favorite is!

Our funniest experience with Tonka irons was when we actually melted an iron in the fire.  It was a low quality one we thought would be just fine.  It could not stand the heat to make the Tonka Pie!  So make sure you buy a good quality iron, or it may melt away!

Since we're talking about fires, which generate smoke, here's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" sung by Judy Garland.  In Iowa when the wind changes direction without warning, you can bet you will get smoke in your eyes if you are situated down wind!
