Sloppy Joes: Happiness

Sloppy Joes are a favorite in the Chaston family.  We love them so much, we make a quadruple batch so we can enjoy leftovers!  This recipe is huge (note that it takes 4 pounds of ground sirloin) so if you need to pare it down, just convert and reduce the amounts accordingly.

Some people like their Sloppy Joes more on the tangy side rather than the sweet.  This is a sweet Sloppy Joe recipe.  If you like your Sloppy Joes more tangy, reduce the amount of brown sugar.  Start by adding a tablespoon at a time to taste.

I've already highlighted the jazz song "Happiness is a Thing Called Joe" for Happy Joe's Taco Pizza, but Sloppy Joes deserve the "happiness" classification as well.  Sloppy Joes are on my sister's top five favorite meals of "food happiness" and I'm sure it will be on yours, too!  As for the song, listening to a little Ella Fitzgerald always makes me happy!

SLOPPY JOES

4 pounds ground sirloin
1/4 cup minced dry onion
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
1 teaspoon prepared mustard
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup celery
2 cups red pepper
1 1/2 cups (12 ounces) tomato paste
2 cups Heinz ketchup
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup white vinegar

Hamburger buns
Cheddar cheese, shredded

In a large pan brown ground sirloin over medium heat.  Periodically break meat apart into small pieces.    Remove from heat and let cool.

Drain grease off meat then add all remaining ingredients (except hamburger buns).

Simmer over medium high heat for about 30 minutes.  Celery and red pepper should still be slightly crunchy when mixture is done.

Serve warm on hamburger buns with shredded cheese.
